National Tax Day on April 2

The government has decided to celebrate the “National Tax Day” on April 2 with great pride from this year onwards.

Accordingly, it will be held on April 2nd, coinciding with the 94th anniversary of the Department of Inland Revenue, giving priority to all religious observances. The aim of the programme is to further develop it and implement a strategic methodology to obtain higher tax revenue every year in the future and to bless those who contributed to it. However, under the guidance of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is also the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, resulted in 2025 being the year in which the highest tax revenue was collected in the history of the country.

The ceremony will be held under the patronage of Minister of Labor and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, and Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Nishantha Jayaweera. The aim of this year’s National Tax Day, which organised by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) in collaboration with  the Special Tax Unit of the Presidential Secretariat, is to make people aware of taxation and to enhance the pride of the Inland Revenue Department for 94 years whilst increasing tax revenue towards a better future. Commissioner General of IRD, Rukdevi Fernando, said that the Department hopes to evaluate taxpayers and increase tax literacy on the National Tax Day to mark the 94th anniversary of the establishment of her department.
