Shangri-La Hambantota Marks a Decade in Sri Lanka’s Deep South
Set across 145 acres along the island’s untamed southern coast, Shangri-La Hambantota this year marks its 10th anniversary celebrating a decade of stories woven through nature, culture, community, and heartfelt connection.
Since welcoming its first guests in June 2016, the resort has evolved into more than a destination escape. For many, it has become a gateway into a slower, richer side of Sri Lanka where peacocks wander at sunrise, artisan traditions continue to thrive, golf unfolds beside coconut groves and lakes, and generations of families return year after year to reconnect with each other and the destination itself.
Marking the milestone under the theme A Decade, With Heart, the anniversary reflects not only on the resort’s growth over the past ten years, but also on the people and stories that have shaped its identity along the way.
“At its core, this anniversary is about people,” said General Manager Refhan Razeen. “The colleagues who built this resort from the beginning, the local communities and artisans who continue to shape its spirit, and the guests who have returned to create memories here over the years. Hambantota has always had a soul unlike anywhere else, and we are proud to have spent the last decade sharing that with the world”
Over the years, the resort has become known for experiences deeply rooted in the destination itself. From its championship golf course the only resort course of its kind in Sri Lanka to immersive cultural encounters, wildlife adventures, wellness journeys, destination weddings, and locally inspired dining, the property has consistently embraced a philosophy of creating meaningful connections to place rather than simply offering a stay.

That sense of place remains central to the anniversary celebrations.
To mark its tenth anniversary, the resort is extending its celebrations beyond the property through a series of initiatives focused on community, sustainability, and colleague appreciation. For the community, Shangri-La Hambantota will host an eye camp for surrounding villages, continue its annual Vesak dansala serving more than 2,000 villagers, and support Sarana, a home for elderly visually impaired individuals. For the planet, the resort will plant 100 mangroves within the property and adjacent areas, reinforcing its commitment to protecting the ecosystems that define Sri Lanka’s southern coast. For colleagues, more than 95 team members who have been part of the journey since opening will be honoured during a special Month of Joy celebration, recognising the people whose dedication and care have shaped the resort over the past decade.
Throughout the year, the resort will unveil a series of special experiences, community initiatives, storytelling campaigns, and curated guest moments inspired by the spirit of Sri Lanka’s southern region. These include celebrations of the artisans and craftspeople connected to the resort, stories of long serving colleagues who have grown alongside the property, destination led experiences inspired by the wider Ruhunu region, and reflective moments that honour the journey of the past decade while looking ahead to the future.
Nature, too, continues to remain an inseparable part of the resort’s identity. Home to rich biodiversity including migratory birds, butterflies, peacocks, and native wildlife, the property has long coexisted alongside the rhythms of the surrounding landscape. Sustainability and environmental stewardship continue to guide many of the resort’s initiatives, from conservation focused practices to supporting local livelihoods and sourcing
Over the past decade, Shangri-La Hambantota has also emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s leading destinations for celebrations, destination weddings, golf tourism, wellness escapes, and multi-generational travel while quietly helping place Hambantota itself onto the global travel map. As the resort steps into its next chapter, the focus remains on deepening those connections even further creating experiences that are more intentional, rooted, and reflective of the destination and its people. Because while much has evolved over the past ten years, the heart of Hambantota remains unchanged.
And perhaps that has always been the story worth celebrating.
